Report: Jets placed waiver claim on new Browns CB M.J. Stewart

The New York Jets made an attempt to beef up their cornerback depth through the waiver wire, but their target landed elsewhere.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Jets put a waiver claim on cornerback M.J. Stewart. Ultimately, Stewart ended up with the Browns because they had the higher waiver priority.

Stewart was a second-round pick out of North Carolina by the Buccaneers in the 2018 NFL Draft. He started out his rookie season as the fifth cornerback on the Bucs’ depth chart before making his first career start in Week 2. However, after injuring his foot, Stewart lost his starting job and never got it back.

In 2018, Stewart had 33 total tackles and three pass defenses. In 2019, Stewart recorded 35 tackles and two pass defenses in 10 games with one start.

The Buccaneers waived Stewart on August 6.
