Jets place second-round tender on RFA Robby Anderson

The New York Jets have placed a second-round tender on restricted free agent wide receiver Robby Anderson, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Anderson is allowed to sign an offer sheet with another team; if he does, the Jets are free to match any deal. If not, the Jets would receive a second-round pick in this year’s draft. The tender could be worth up to just over $3 million.

The undrafted free agent out of Temple had a bumpy second season but finally came on toward the end, forming a rapport with rookie QB Sam Darnold. Anderson caught 50 passes for 752 yards and six touchdowns. In the final three weeks of the season, when Darnold was the highest-rated QB in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, Anderson caught 19 passes for 260 yards and two scores.

Anderson has expressed a willingness to sign a long-term deal, but the Jets do not need to worry about that unless another team signs him to an offer sheet. The Jets have already locked up Quincy Enunwa this offseason and seem set on retaining their top two targets for Darnold next season.

Coach Adam Gase raved about Anderson’s game at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, so it’s safe to say he’s in New York’s future plans. Gase is excited to get Anderson more involved his year, wanting the third-year receiver to be a multipurpose weapon on offense.
