Report: Jets expressing interest in Rams G Rodger Saffold

For all the talk linking the Jets to pass rushers and running backs this offseason, it can be argued that Gang Green’s top priority should be to improve the offensive line.

New York needs better protection around Sam Darnold, who was sacked 30 times during his rookie reason. More weapons on offense are a must for the quarterback, but Darnold also needs time to find them.

With that in mind, expect the Jets to improve the middle of their line this offseason. One option could be Rodger Saffold. According to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes, New York is interested in the Rams’ free agent guard, though there will be a lot of competition to sign him.

Saffold, 30, has spent his entire career with the Rams since being drafted by in 2010 out of Indiana University. In his rookie season, he started all 16 games at left tackle and only allowed three sacks. He was named to the Pro Football Weekly and the Sporting News All-Rookie teams.

Saffold officially made the switch from tackle to guard in 2014 when he started all 16 games, playing on both sides. He’s mostly played on the left side since then. Saffold had his best season in 2017 when he was named Second-Team All-Pro.

The Jets have a huge hole at left guard with James Carpenter bound for free agency. While the Jets can re-sign Carpenter, the veteran is coming off a shoulder injury and has been on the decline.

The right side of the offensive line is all but set with Brian Winters and Brandon Shell occupying the right guard and right tackle positions, respectively. The Jets currently have Kelvin Beachum at left tackle — though that could change — so upgrading the center and left guard positions are a priority along the line. Saffold would go a long way toward filling one of those spots if the Jets can sway him to New York.
