Report: Jamaal Charles to sign one-day contract and retire with Chiefs

Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is ready to hang up his cleats.

According to 610 Sports, Charles plans to sign a one-day contract and retire as a member of the Chiefs. He’ll retire with the organization he spent the majority of his career with. Charles has been pondering retirement for some time now. During a March interview with TMZ Sports, Charles was asked if he was still ready to play.

“It’s in the air right now,” Charles said. “I’m going to sit down with my family and still try to go through the process of what is the best thing for us, and I’m going to move on from there.”

It appears that Charles has made his decision. He has nothing to be disappointed with during his illustrious career. He remains among one of the NFL’s career leaders in rushing yards per carry. It’s a statistic that will likely be debated as the clock begins for his name to come up for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It’s a place that he believes he belongs based on his career numbers.

Charles finished his nine-year Chiefs career (103 games) with 9,717 scrimmage yards, 63 total touchdowns and a 5.5-yards-per-carry average. He remains the Chiefs franchise leader in career rushing yards, single-game rushing yards, and both season and career yards per carry.

Even if Charles doesn’t end up in Canton, he’ll be remembered as one of the most exciting and explosive players in Chiefs history.
