Report: Jaguars not sold on Nick Foles, eyeing Teddy Bridgewater

The free agency outlook for New Orleans Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is slim, but Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that one team could be in the hunt for his services: the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville has been connected to Philadelphia Eagles backup Nick Foles, Super Bowl LII MVP and soon-to-be free agent, but Schefter suggests that is hardly a done deal.

Honestly, this shouldn’t be surprising. No formal negotiations between free agents and teams can begin until Monday, March 11, so any arrangement that the Jaguars and Foles already had in place would result in thunderous tampering penalties from the league office. Of course the Jaguars are going to look at other free agent quarterbacks.

Additionally, this could be a simple negotiating tactic by Jacksonville. They and Foles make up the easiest quarterback-team fit on the NFL landscape, granting Foles leverage against them. Expressing interest in Bridgewater would give the Jaguars a competitor to Foles, possibly lowering his contract demands.

We’ll know soon enough whether the Saints will be able to keep Bridgewater in town another year, if not longer. He’s just 26 and proved he can conduct the offense well in admittedly limited action, and surrounded by inadequate talent. It’s a big opportunity for the Saints to put a plan in place for life after Drew Brees.
