Report: Jags still remain interested in Andy Dalton if the price is right

The Jacksonville Jaguars only have two quarterbacks on their roster at the moment in Gardner Minshew II and Joshua Dobbs but that could change through a potential late-round draft selection (and/or an undrafted addition). An even stronger possibility is the Jags signing a veteran down the road.

One name we were told to watch by NFL insider Ian Rapoport was Andy Dalton (if released) due to his connection with offensive coordinator Jay Gruden. Rapoport reiterated the Jags’ interest earlier this month and his NFL Network comrade, Mike Silver, is also reporting the same.

“As he hunkers down like the majority of Americans, Dalton is doing his best not to obsess over where he might end up. The Jacksonville Jaguars — who hired his former Bengals offensive coordinator, Jay Gruden, to serve in that role in January — have interest in signing Dalton if the price is right. Dalton would likely be viewed as a backup plan should things not go smoothly with Gardner Minshew, a 2019 sixth-round pick who emerged as the starter last season.”

The Jags, of course, don’t want to deal with the $17.7 million cap hit and other hassles that would come with trading for him so they appear to be waiting for a potential release. The belief is that the Bengals will take Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick, however, the team hasn’t indicated what that would mean for Dalton.

Even if the Bengals land Burrow, that wouldn’t necessarily mean they would give Dalton the boot as he’s said he’s at least open to a return. When considering all that has been reported, it appears Dalton’s fate won’t be decided until after the draft so Jags fans will have to wait a little longer for some clarity on them adding the veteran.
