Report: Jags offered Yannick Ngakoue short-term deal worth $19M per year

With Jacksonville Jaguars training camp starting Thursday and their veterans reporting Wednesday, defensive end Yannick Ngakoue will be the only player who won’t be attending. Instead, the fourth-year pass-rusher will be looking to get a contract extension after talks reportedly broke down between his party and the Jags’ brass. However, the details were uncertain as to what was on the table — at least until now.

Per NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Jaguars’ offer was a short-term deal that would’ve paid out $19 million annually and made him the fourth-highest paid defensive end behind Khalil Mack, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Frank Clark. Pelissero also stated that the deal would’ve included $50 million over the first two years, however, Ngakoue’s camp (represented by Ari Nissim of Roc Nation) passed on the offer.

The first tidbit worth noting is that it’s unclear how much of the $50 million over two years would be guaranteed. Additionally, it sounds like the deal was a quick cash grab with questionable long-term security (probably a three-year deal).

By comparison, the deals Lawrence and Clark got were for five years and $105 million and $104 million, respectively, guaranteeing over $62 million. That said, it appears the Jags and Ngakoue’s camp will have to find some common ground in terms of the contract’s longevity (which means more guaranteed money, too) before a compromise is made, if at all.
