After watching the sixth-rounder go 6-6 as a rookie starter, it appears the Jacksonville Jaguars are ready to move on into 2020 with Gardner Minshew II as their starter. Per Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the team wants Minshew to be their starter and would like to find a trade partner for Nick Foles.
In Jacksonville, word is the Jaguars want to go with Gardner Minshew II as their starting QB and, ideally, find a trade partner for Foles. Could a reunion with former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich in Indianapolis be a possibility for Foles?
The news comes a year after Foles signed a four-year, $88 million deal with the Jags almost a year ago, making him the most expensive free-agent acquisition in team history. Prior, in 2017, Foles was coming off a year where he replaced Carson Wentz late in the regular season to propel the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl. Of course, they went on to win the big one and he was named the games most valuable player.
Unfortunately, Foles didn’t get off to as good of a start in Jacksonville after going down with a collarbone injury Week 1 against one of his old teams in the Kansas City Chiefs. Minshew then took over until Week 11’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. Three weeks later against the Los Angeles Chargers, Minshew was inserted back into the lineup as the starter with Foles struggling to find his groove. At that point, the veteran ended the season 77-of-117 (65.8%) for 736 yards, three touchdowns, and two picks.
Minshew, on the other hand, finished the season 285-of-470 (60.6%) for 3,271 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and six picks. As a result, he was named Pepsi’s Rookie of the Week seven times and was Snicker’s Hungriest Player of the Year.
