Report: Incoming Giants coach Joe Judge will hire his own staff

Did the New York Giants request an interview with Jason Garrett to take over as their next head coach or their next offensive coordinator? There are conflicting reports on that, but in the end, it doesn’t matter.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reported earlier in the day that the Giants had sought to interview Garrett in hopes of making him their next offensive coordinator, but SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano disputes that, reporting that the request was regarding the team’s then-vacant head coaching position.

Ultimately, the Giants opted to hire New England Patriots special teams coordinator/wide receiver coach Joe Judge and will allow him to hire his own staff, which does not likely include Garrett.

Although Garrett is an enticing offensive coordinator, this should actually be taken as positive news. It means that general manager Dave Gettleman will not micromanage Judge or force a staff upon him, allowing the first-time head coach to bring in men he trusts.

What Judge’s staff will look like is anyone’s guess at this point, but it’s likely that he will pilfer several assistants away from the Patriots.
