Report: If Giants whiff on Matt Rhule, Jason Garrett will be their fallback

The New York Giants will interview Baylor’s Matt Rhule on Tuesday for their vacant head coaching position, and by all accounts, he is their primary target to hire.

However, things are rarely guaranteed in the NFL and with the Carolina Panthers also in active pursuit of Rhule, it’s possible he walks out those doors in East Rutherford and panic sets in.

Should Rhule manage to leave the building without a deal on Tuesday evening, the Giants will be sent scrambling. They will interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on Wednesday, but their true fallback option is likely former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, reports Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.

Jason Garrett, recently (and finally) out of the picture with the Cowboys, is a fallback option the Giants will consider — but only if things go sour with Rhule, The Post has learned.

Garrett has had his eye on the Giants job for years despite being employed in Dallas, and it’s said to be his No. 1 destination in 2020. The Giants have also been enamored with Garrett in the past and likely wouldn’t hesitate to sign him if all other options are exhausted.

Late last week, after officially being told he will not return to Dallas in 2020, Garrett met with his staff to discuss the potential of taking over in New York.
