Google, which helped propel the Fulton Market District as an office destination when it moved its Midwest headquarters there in 2015, may be about to expand its presence in the neighborhood.
Crain’s Chicago Business said Tuesday the tech giant is looking to double the space it occupies just west of downtown to about 1 million square feet. Google’s media representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
The company occupies more than 360,000 square feet in a complex at 1000 W. Fulton Market that includes a former cold storage warehouse. It also is leasing another 132,000 square feet in a nearby development at 210 N. Carpenter St. Both are projects of development firm Sterling Bay. Its executives could not be reached for comment.
Google also could be considering office projects Sterling Bay has planned at 1000 W. Carroll Ave. and 345 N. Morgan St., but both require city approvals before construction can start. An option already under construction is a 750,000-square-foot building at 167 N. Green St. that is due to be completed next year. The building is a joint venture of Focus Development and Shapack Partners.
