After a flurry of trades that were eventually filed to the league as a single deal on Wednesday, the New York Giants were able to horde a slew of picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, including two first-round pick and a total of four over the first 100.
Even with that abundance of ammunition, the Giants run the risk of missing out on both Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins, who could each be taken over the first five picks.
A trade up could be exceptionally costly, so Giants general manager Dave Gettleman is likely to consider an alternate approach to finding Eli Manning’s eventual heir.
Dan Graziano of ESPN reports that the Giants would consider a trade for quarterback Josh Rosen should the Arizona Cardinals make him available.
Sources said they would explore a trade for Arizona’s Josh Rosen, if the Cardinals decide to make him available, but that they aren’t sure yet whether that will happen or whether they would be sure to make an offer for Rosen if it did.
If the Giants were to trade for Rosen, they could sit him behind Manning, who is reportedly cemented in as the team’s starter in 2019, and then have him take over in 2020.
But just how much would Rosen cost? One assistant general manager in the AFC recently suggested a second-round pick or, perhaps more realistically, a third-round pick.
“Talent-wise, he’s a first-rounder,” they told NFL Network. “However, I still have some of the same concerns about him that I had when he was coming out. I’m guessing a team will give up a second- or third-round pick for him because he has a cost-controlled contract for the next three years. … However, how many teams did the deep dive on the quarterbacks last year and really know the kid?
“Remember some quarterback-needy teams passed on him last year.”
The early belief is that the Cardinals may target Murray with the No. 1 overall pick, and if that becomes a sure thing within the organization over the coming days and weeks, expect conversations between Arizona and New York to pick up.
