Report: Giants ‘won’t hesitate to extend’ Eli Manning’s contract

The New York Giants have already committed themselves to quarterback Eli Manning in 2019, but don’t expect this to be his swan song.

From co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch to general manager Dave Gettleman to head coach Pat Shurmur, the overriding belief within the organization is that Manning has plenty of gas left in the tank.

In fact, Tisch recently went as far as to call Manning a security blanket.

“It gives me a sense of security, for sure. Not only knowing how talented and capable Eli is, but at some point he will also take on the role of mentor. And I think when he does take on the role of mentor, he will be very, very effective,” Tisch told Giants.com last week.

When Manning does eventually take on the role of mentor, there’s no telling how long he’ll serve as the teacher. He could fill that role in 2019 and then move on or it could continue through 2020.

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv reports the Giants “won’t hesitate” to re-sign because the key decisions makers genuinely believe he still gives them the best chance to win.

They’re not kidding about the thought of bringing back Eli Manning in 2020

Yes, really. The key people in the organization don’t think he’s done, and they feel they saw a ton of positive signs in the second half last year. Ideally, they’ll have his successor ready to go next season. But if not, barring a disaster of a season, they won’t hesitate to extend Manning’s contract by a year. They really do want him around to rub off on the next Giants franchise quarterback, if they can make it work.

While this isn’t exactly new news, it reinforces what many already believe — the Giants are in no rush to move on from Manning despite the outcry from fans, armchair GMs and media members trying to drive a narrative the team doesn’t agree with.
