Report: Giants will not retain assistant Henry Baker

The potential New York Giants returns of linebackers coach Bill McGovern and defensive line coach Gary Emanuel were officially ruled out on Monday, but they weren’t the only assistants to be informed they would not be returning to East Rutherford.

In addition to McGovern and Emanuel, Art Stapleton of USA TODAY Network reports that assistant defensive backs coach Henry Baker will also not be back in 2020.

As Stapleton points out, Baker joined the Giants as a first-time NFL assistant last season and was initially slated to assist Lou Anarumo, but he jetted off to Cincinnati to become defensive coordinator of the Bengals. In his place, the Giants hired Everett Withers, another first-time NFL assistant, whom Baker served under.

It was a tough straw to draw for Baker, who ended up working with a substantial amount of young players in the secondary, which highlights the overall lack of experience the team had at the position.

Prior to joining the Giants, Baker spent several years as an assistant with both Rutgers and North Carolina.
