Report: Giants waive WR Alonzo Russell

After an impressive preseason, wide receiver Alonzo Russell was Saturday’s feel-good story, making the New York Giants’ initial 53-man roster on hustle and hard work.

Unfortunately, the NFL is a brutal business and less than 24 hours later, Russell has been sent packing.

After claiming wide receiver Cody Core off of waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals and offensive tackle Eric Smith off of waivers from the New York Jets, the Giants had to make two corresponding roster moves.

It was thought that one of those moves could have been wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring) being placed on injured reserve, but instead, it was saying goodbye to the 26-year-old Russell.

Russell was the team’s second-most productive receiver this preseason, hauling in six receptions for 131 yards and two touchdowns while also contributing on special teams. The only receiver who out-performed him was T.J. Jones, who had his contract terminated on Saturday.

Russell is not eligible to be signed to the Giants’ practice squad.
