Report: Giants tried to trade up for Josh Allen after drafting Daniel Jones

After drafting Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft instead of pass-rusher Josh Allen, the New York Giants made a second effort to try and land the Kentucky product.

There’s no question the Giants needed an impact pass-rusher going into the draft, and with Allen sitting there at No. 6, fans and the media alike were shocked when the choice ended up being Jones.

But even after taking the Duke product in that spot, the Giants still made a push to land Allen, and it looks as though the Giants had to.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Giants attempted to trade up and snag Allen, who eventually went to the Jacksonville Jaguars with the next pick, after taking Jones with their first pick.

That would have been a major score for Big Blue to land both Jones and Allen, but unfortunately for the team and Giants fans, it didn’t happen.

Instead, Allen is now playing in Jacksonville for former Giants head coach and current Jaguars executive vice president of football operations, Tom Coughlin.

While Giants fans certainly understood the team’s need to find a new quarterback for the future, the issue here was that many believe the Giants could have waited to draft Jones with the No. 17 overall pick.

Well, Rapoport dropped another dime on that notion, as he confirms there were multiple teams who would have taken Jones at No. 6.

Until now, the only person who has really given any insight into the Giants actually having the option to wait on Jones has been former Big blue signal-caller, Phil Simms.

Many were doubtful of Simms when he said the Giants had to take Jones No. 6 because other teams ahead of them at No. 17 were going to pick the Duke product. Rapoport has now confirmed that could be true.

Currently, the Giants have taken a ton of slack for their decisions in the 2019 draft; however, if Jones works out for the team and becomes a franchise quarterback for years to come, history could look kindly upon general manager Dave Gettleman’s decision.
