Report: Giants to waive LB B.J. Goodson

When the New York Giants announced their initial 53-man roster on Saturday, it was somewhat surprising to see inside linebacker B.J. Goodson make the cut.

While Goodson had previously been a starter, he had fallen out of favor once James Bettcher took over as defensive coordinator and shifted to a 3-4 hybrid style defense.

The veteran linebacker didn’t seem like a fit and spent much of the spring and summer taking third-team reps in practice.

But even after the Giants made several Sunday adjustments to their roster, Goodson remained. However, that will now change.

Jordan Raanan of ESPN reports that the Giants will waive Goodson on Monday, although there is no word regarding who will replace him on the roster.

A 2016 fourth-round pick, Goodson was one of just seven players left over from the Jerry Reese era. In his three seasons with the Giants, he appeared in 37 games with 20 starts, recording 116 tackles, 0.5 sacks, two interceptions, six passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

For the better part of the last two seasons, Goodson has been hindered due to injury and defensive inconsistency.

Goodson is a tough, physical middle linebacker who will likely find a home in a 4-3 defense.

Update: Goodson was ultimately traded to the Green Bay Packers.
