Giants to re-sign WR T.J. Jones, place Kareem Martin on IR

With wide receiver Sterling Shepard in concussion protocol and uncertain for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, the New York Giants are bringing in a familiar face as part of their reinforcements.

Art Stapleton of USA TODAY/NorthJersey.com reports that the team is re-signing wide receiver T.J. Jones, who had been with the Giants throughout the summer and preseason.

The Giants are re-signing wide receiver T.J. Jones.

Jones was with the team in the preseason and seemingly did enough to make the 53-man roster, but he was released on Labor Day weekend. A source told NorthJersey.com and USA TODAY Network Northeast that Jones is in transit and on his way to the facility Wednesday.

As Stapleton alludes, Jones appeared destined to make the Giants’ 53-man roster, but was one of the few surprising releases on cutdown day late last month.

Jones was a sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions out of Notre Dame in 2014, running a 4.48 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis that year. He played four seasons for the Lions, with his best coming in 2017 when he caught 30 passes for 399 yards and one touchdown.

Jones (6-foot, 188 pounds) is the godson of another former Notre Dame receiver Raghib “Rocket” Ismail, a former Heisman Trophy runner-up who went on to play in the NFL for the Raiders, Panthers and Cowboys.

In four preseason games, Jones caught a team-high 12 receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

In a corresponding roster move, the Giants have placed linebacker Kareem Martin on injured reserve with a knee sprain.
