Report: Giants restructured Kevin Zeitler’s contract, saved $5 million in cap space

When the New York Giants acquired offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler from the Cleveland Browns in a trade involving Odell Beckham Jr. earlier this offseason, it was speculated they may work to restructure his contract at some point.

With slightly over 24 hours remaining until the 2019 NFL Draft, the team has opted to do just that, reportedly converting his $7.5 million base salary into a signing bonus, effectively creating $5 million in additional salary cap space.

Prior to word of Zeitler’s restructure, Over the Cap had the Giants down to $9.35 million in remaining cap space, much of which was to be allocated to their upcoming draft class.

With the additional $5 million saved from Zeitler, the Giants may take one final swing at the free agent market after the conclusion of the upcoming three-day draft. And depending on how things shake out, one potential target could be right tackle Mike Remmers, who will soon be able to pass a physical.

Even if the Giants opt to rest after the draft and spend very little of the added cap space, they’ll likely use it throughout the season as roster tinkering continues and the inevitability of injuries arise.
