Report: Giants one of four teams interested in Deone Bucannon

The New York Giants are one of four teams said to have interest in free agent linebacker Deone Bucannon, the former Arizona Cardinals star who was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday.

Bucannon played under current Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher in the highly successful Cardinals defense under then-head coach Bruce Arians from 2015-2017.

The former first-round pick out of Washington State was first played at safety in 2014 before the Cards moved the 6-foot-1, 211-pound Bucannon to linebacker where he flourished in a new role created for him; it was coined the “moneybacker.”

Bucannon became a free agent after last season and signed with Tampa Bay, where Arians is now the head coach. He was stuck behind Lavonte David and rookie Devin White, and was released after five games.

By all accounts, Bucannon can bring some depth and life to the Giants’ thinning linebacker corps.
