Report: Giants’ Joe Judge to meet with Freddie Kitchens about staff position

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge is hard at work compiling his brand new staff, and in addition to retaining special teams coordinator McGaughey, he is scheduled to meet with former Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens about a position in East Rutherford.

The relationship between Judge and Kitchens goes back to the mid-2000s when Judge was a graduate assistant at Mississippi State and Kitchens was serving as the tight ends and running backs coach.

In fact, Judge once recalled a funny story about helping Kitchens build a swing set for his children, which did not go according to plan.

“So we’re thinking all right, bye week. It’s Sunday. We’ll be out of here 2 in the afternoon,” Judge recalled in an interview during Super Bowl week last year. “We’ll get a swing set put together. Shoot, we’ll be done by 5 o’clock, eating dinner still home.

“We don’t get out of work until about 8 o’clock that night. We’re over at Freddie’s house putting together a swing set until 11 o’clock that night. That was on Sunday. We finally finish that thing on Thursday night, working until 11 or midnight every night.”

Judge also recalled that Kitchens would give some of the graduate assistants money because they didn’t draw a salary, which was an upstanding move that stuck with the up-and-comer.

What role Judge has in mind for Kitchens remains to be seen, but it could be anything from offensive coordinator to quarterbacks coach or running backs coach.
