The New York Giants are slated to interview former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett for their vacant offensive coordinator position on Wednesday, reports Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
Garrett has been a name connected to the Giants for weeks and the team had even put in a request to interview him prior to hiring Joe Judge as their head coach. However, at the time, the interest was specific to the head coaching position and not necessarily the offensive coordinator position.
With no head coaching vacancies remaining across the league and Garrett’s contract with the Cowboys officially expiring on Tuesday evening, a coordinator position is what he will have to settle for. And where better than New York?
Garrett has long been fond of the Giants, and the feeling is clearly mutual. Even after the hiring of Judge, Giants co-owner John Mara made it abundantly clear he was open to Garrett taking on the OC role.
““It’s going to be up to Joe ultimately who he brings on as an offensive coordinator. I certainly wouldn’t have any objection to (Jason Garrett). I have a lot of respect for Jason. At the end of the day, that’s going to be Joe’s decision,” Mara said last week, via Kim Jones.
With Judge compiling a relatively young and inexperienced staff, the addition of a veteran mind like Garrett would be a huge get for New York. He would provide experience that’s currently lacking, as well as leadership that falls in line with Judge and others.
In addition to Garrett, Judge has also interviewed Mike Shula for the offensive coordinator position.
