Report: Giants held private workout for San Jose State TE Josh Oliver

The New York Giants don’t really have a need at tight end given the presence of both Evan Engram and Rhett Ellison, but that hasn’t stopped the team from poking around some of the top prospects at the position.

Most recently, the Giants checked in on San Jose State tight end Josh Oliver, who was in for a private workout, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Although Oliver doesn’t boast the prestige of a T.J. Hockenson or Noah Fant, he is widely considered one of the best tight ends available in April’s upcoming draft and is projected to go anywhere from between Rounds 3 and 5.

Pro Football Focus also recently praised Oliver, ranking him among the top 10 tight ends in the draft.

Oliver is one of the most physically imposing tight ends in the draft class. His 16 contested catches led all tight ends in college football.

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Oliver also drew rave reviews from our friends over at Draft Wire, who call him one of the most well-rounded tight ends in the draft.

Oliver broke out during his senior season, where he put up some eye-catching numbers. He amassed 56 receptions for 709 yards and four touchdowns for the Spartans.

His physical profile is intriguing, where he stands at 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds. Oliver is one of the more well-rounded tight end prospects in this group, as he showcases the athleticism to be effective in a variety of ways.

He is comfortable with a man on his hip to win contested balls, but is just as effective catching in stride with good hand-eye coordination and sticky hands. His play speed includes multiples gears, quickly entering his route and finishing with burst.

If the Giants do decide to snag a tight end, it wouldn’t come until the middle rounds anyway, so perhaps Oliver is someone worth keeping a close eye on.
