One of many of the Arizona Cardinals’ unrestricted free agents is linebacker Deone Bucannon. Bucannon, who played the last five seasons for Arizona after being drafted in the first round, will test the free agent market after a disappointing 2018.
He could land with a coach he knows well. According to the New York Daily News’ Pat Leonard, the New York Giants have contacted Bucannon.
James Bettcher is New York’s defensive coordinator, who held the same position for the Cardinals from 2015-2017. Bucannon’s best seasons were under Bettcher.
In 2015, Bucannon’s best season, he had 109 tackles, three sacks, an interception, three broken up passes, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He scored a defensive touchdown. In terms of filling the stat sheet, only Thomas Davis of the Panthers was that productive.
He struggled in a new position and in a new defensive scheme, and struggled some with injuries for the third season in a row. He finished with 38 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 13 games. He only started six games.
