Report: Giants claim WR Cody Core, OT Eric Smith off waivers

The New York Giants were expected to make a few waiver wire moves following Saturday’s cutdown day and they lived up to those expectations on Sunday by claiming wide receiver Cody Core off of waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals.

A sixth-round pick of the Bengals in the 2016 NFL Draft, Core has appeared in 35 games with seven starts, recording 30 receptions for 360 yards and one touchdown.

The 6-foot-3, 203-pound Core was also a key special teams contributor in Cincinnati, taking 462 snaps on the third unit during his young career, which a role he’ll likely slide into with the Giants as well.

In addition to Core, the Giants also claimed offensive tackle Eric Smith off of waivers from the New York Jets.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Smith originally signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia following the 2017 NFL Draft. He made a brief stop with the New England Patriots before joining the aforementioned Jets in 2018.

Smith is considered a developmental tackle who will add to the Giants’ thin depth at the position. He has never appeared in a regular season game.

Corresponding roster moves have yet to be announced.
