Report: Giants claim former 49ers TE Kaden Smith off waivers

The 49ers couldn’t sneak tight end Kaden Smith through waivers. The Giants claimed the 49ers’ 2019 sixth-round pick Monday according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

San Francisco waived Smith on Saturday to make room for running back Jeff Wilson. Wilson went for 34 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries against the Bengals. The 49ers’ plan was likely to get Smith through waivers and re-add him to their practice squad.

Losing Smith won’t be the end of the world for San Francisco. He was inactive the first game and was the fourth tight end on the active roster. They also have tight end Daniel Helm already on the practice squad.

Smith landing in New York means the 49ers still have a spot open on their practice squad. He was a sixth-round pick out of Stanford in this year’s draft. In two years with the Cardinal, Smith posted 70 catches for 1,049 yards and seven touchdowns.
