Report: Giants brass met privately with Dwayne Haskins

Are the New York Giants interested in Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins or are they not? That’s been the question for weeks now and the reports are varying.

Earlier this week, ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported that the Giants were not planning to scout Haskins to any significant degree, seeming to imply they lacked interest in him at No. 6 overall.

“About a week after the Combine, I circled back with some [Giants] people like, ‘What are you thinking about Haskins? Do you guys like him? Do you think you are going for it with your No. 6 pick?’” Russini said on ESPN’s Breaking Big Blue podcast. “It was, ‘No, actually. We are not doing a lot of work on him.’

“I spoke to a few people. I’ll paraphrase one: ‘He doesn’t fit with us.’ The idea that they are not going go after a quarterback with the No. 6 pick solidifies they are not giving up on Eli (Manning).”

That report seemed to flounder on Tuesday as the Giants sent scouts and team brass to Ohio State for the Buckeye’s Pro Day on Wednesday. It then fell dead in the water on Tuesday night as Giants’ executives met privately with Haskins over dinner.

The dinner date was significant not just because it was had, but because of who attended.

Mike Garafolo reports that in addition to head coach Pat Shurmur and offensive coordinator Mike Shula, senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara, director of college scouting Chris Pettit and assistant general manager Kevin Abrams.

Short of general manager Dave Gettleman, that’s every major name in the Giants organization around the table with Haskins. Needless to say, any reports of the team’s lack of interest appear to be going out the window.
