Report: Giants actively shopping CB Janoris Jenkins

The NFL trade deadline is rapidly approaching and thus far, the New York Giants have been surprisingly quiet despite expectations that they might sell off much of their stock.

That’s not to say general manager Dave Gettleman isn’t working the phones, however.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports that the Giants are actively shopping veteran cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who was brought back in 2019 in an effort to help tutor the team’s many young defensive backs.

One player that has been shopped around some is Giants CB Janoris Jenkins, who’s not what he was but is still a solid starter—and would cost another team $5.37 million over nine game checks for the rest of the year, and is under contract for $11.25 million for next year ($1 million roster bonus due in March, $100K workout bonus, $10.15 million base). He turns 31 on the day of the deadline.

Jenkins has long been considered a likely bargaining chip for the Giants, but he’s somehow managed to remain over the last several years.

Highly thought of by head coach Pat Shurmur, Jenkins being shopped is more about clearing salary cap space than any sort of reflection on the player, who, at times, still displays some top-end ability.

Of course, there are also times where Jenkins seems to lose his focus and appears to be the weak link on the field. It’s a fine balance.

At this point however, it’s time to give Jenkins the opportunity to win elsewhere. He’s been a good soldier for the Giants, but it’s time for both he and the team to move on.
