Report: Free agent CB Morris Claiborne facing suspension

Well, now we know why Morris Claiborne is not under contract with the cornerback-needy Jets or any other team in the NFL.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Claiborne is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He is appealing the punishment and could ultimately see a reduced sentence, but right now he’s looking at missing a big chunk of games to start the 2019 season.

This explains why Claiborne, an established veteran and capable No. 2 corner, remains a free agent as August begins. Many have suggested that the Jets, who lack proven depth at the position, bring him back for a third season, but that seems especially unlikely now.

Claiborne, a vet of seven years, started 30 games for the Jets over the last two seasons. During his time in New York, he accumulated three interceptions — including a pick-six — 22 passes defended and 78 tackles.
