Report: Free agent CB Kevin Johnson visiting Jets

Texans free agent CB Kevin Johnson is making the rounds after being released by the team that drafted him.

The soon to be fifth-year cornerback out of Wake Forrest will visit the Jets next, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson. Johnson has already visited with the Bills and Browns. The Panthers are also interested in his services.

A former first-round pick, Johnson was a highly touted cornerback out of college, but injuries have sidelined him for most of his career.

Johnson was the cleanest defensive back in his draft class, with the ability to play both inside and outside. The concerns at the time that he was drafted had to do with his frame and durability.

Johnson has only appeared in a full 16 games once, which was his rookie season. Since then, Johnson has only played 19 of 48 possible games. In his sophomore season, he broke his foot, causing him to miss 10 games.

Last season, Johnson was placed on injured reserve after suffering a concussion in Week 1. He never played another down for the Texans, leading to his release on March 5.

The Jets have an obvious need at cornerback. Morris Claiborne, Buster Skrine and Darryl Roberts are all set to become free agents. While it is likely that Roberts returns, there is no guarantee that the other two veterans will be back in green and white.

Johnson would provide the Jets with much-needed depth, but he cannot be counted on as their No. 2 cornerback. Johnson only has one career interception playing in 35 career games through four seasons.

Johnson is an intriguing option, but the Jets have to be careful placing their bets on an injury prone player. However, there is no harm in taking a flier.
