Maryland football is hiring Josh Gattis as a co-offensive coordinator to fill out its staff for the 2023 season, Football Scoop reports.
Gattis and Maryland head coach Mike Locksley have a previous history, as the two coached at Alabama together. They won a national championship together as co-offensive coordinators in 2018, serving as the two main offensive voices on Nick Saban’s coaching staff.
It appeared that Gattis was going to join Locksley in Maryland for the 2019 season, but Gattis spurned the Terrapins for Michigan at the last second, rubbing Locksley the wrong way.
Since then, Gattis coached at Michigan for three years and Miami for one year, but the Hurricanes fired him after the season. Last year, Maryland finished No. 67 in scoring offense under Locksley, while Gattis’s Miami offense was ranked No. 97 in that category.
Gattis joins former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin as Maryland’s two new co-offensive coordinators.
After the season, Maryland lost both of their offensive coordinators to other opportunities, as last year’s co-offensive coordinators Don Enos and Mike Miller took similar jobs at Arkansas and Charlotte, respectively. The Terrapins are bringing back quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who will play his senior season in 2023.
