Longtime Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt might not be a free agent for much longer.
According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Colquitt will be working out with the Pittsburgh Steelers in hopes of earning a roster spot. The Chiefs released the veteran punter after he spent 15 consecutive seasons in Kansas City as their starter at the position. He was recently at Arrowhead Stadium to receive his Super Bowl LIV ring.
Colquitt served as a consistent player on and off the field during his career, becoming an ambassador in many cases for the team. Now, he’ll have an opportunity to continue his playing career elsewhere.

When the Chiefs released Colquitt back in April, general manager Brett Veach released a statement showing respect for his service and time in Kansas City.
“I have a great deal of respect and admiration for Dustin and the incredible career he was able to put together here in Kansas City,” Veach said. “When you have a player that special, and someone who has meant so much to our team and community for so long, it makes these decisions really hard. I certainly enjoyed our time together here and wish him the best as he moves forward.”
Currently, the Steelers have punter Jordan Berry on their roster, but this recent tryout offer to Colquitt is a sign that things aren’t secure for Berry before Week 1. The Chiefs aren’t scheduled to meet the Steelers this year, but Pittsburgh is always a threat to make the playoffs. The potential matchup scenario with Colquitt in a Pittsburgh uniform is a chilling thought for fans in Kansas City. Such is the reality when you move on from a longtime member of the team before they’re ready to retire.
