Report: Falcons will let CB Brian Poole become a free agent

According to a report by Vaughn McClure at ESPN, the Falcons have informed cornerback Brian Poole he will become a free agent next month. Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk first broke the news.

Poole followed up these reports with a tweet of his own.

This move was expected. With starting safeties Ricardo Allen and Keanu Neal returning in 2019, the best way for the Falcons to keep Damontae Kazee on the field is to play him at Poole’s slot cornerback spot.

While the team reportedly wants to bring him back at a lower price than a tender, the chances of that actually happening are low.

Poole is a solid coverage nickel who is also an above-average pass rusher for a defensive back. He will almost certainly catch on with another NFL team. In 47 career games – all with Atlanta – Poole has posted 195 combined tackles, four interceptions, five sacks and 11 QB hits.
