Falcons re-sign DT Ra’Shede Hageman to 1-year deal

The Falcons appear to be serious about upgrading their depth at defensive tackle this offseason. According to a report by D. Orlando Ledbetter at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the team is re-signing defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman today.

Hageman was a second-round pick for Atlanta in the 2014 NFL draft. He saw little playing time as a rookie and didn’t start until his second season in the league. Hageman wound up playing 44 games (16 starts) in three seasons with the Falcons. During that time, he posted four sacks, 12 QB hits and nine tackles for a loss.

In addition to never really living up to his status as a second-rounder, off-the-field problems have followed Hageman. He was originally released after being suspended six games by the NFL for a domestic violence allegation. He also faces another two-game suspension over a DUI in 2018.

Hageman says he has learned a lot over his last two years being out of football and accepts the consequences for his actions:

With Hageman and the recently signed Tyeler Davison in the fold, there’s a stronger chance the Falcons won’t be using their first-round pick at the same position. As promising as Ed Oliver looks, he’s unlikely to be around at No. 14 and trading up would be costly.

Instead, look for Atlanta to either go best player available or address the right tackle spot in the first round.

Update:

The team has announced the Hageman signing. It’s a one-year deal.
