Report: Falcons save $7 million in cap space by restructuring Matt Ryan’s contract

The Atlanta Falcons have finally freed up some cap space. They were estimated to be just $6.7 million under the cap after franchise tagging defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. That number is about to be more than doubled thanks to just one move.

According to a report by Field Yates at ESPN, the team has saved $7 million in cap room by restructuring starting quarterback Matt Ryan’s contract. $8.75 million of Ryan’s base salary for this year is being converted into a signing bonus.

Restructuring Ryan is a good start, but less than $14 million still isn’t much room to work with. Atlanta could also look to re-work the deals of 2018 starting offensive tackles Jake Matthews and Ryan Schraeder. Trading defensive end Vic Beasley is another option that would save a lot of money.
