Report: Falcons releasing rookie cornerback Rashard Causey

According to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, the Atlanta Falcons are releasing undrafted rookie cornerback Rashard Causey, who has been battling a hamstring injury.

Causey (six-foot, 195 pounds) played his college football at UCF, where he posted 64 tackles, two sacks and seven pass breakups in 23 games.

The chances for Causey to make the roster were always long, given the depth Atlanta has at the position.

While Causey’s injury and play on the field probably didn’t help, this move could in part be a reflection of the team’s confidence in their two 2019 cornerback draft picks: Jordan Miller from Washington and Kendall Sheffield of Ohio State, both of whom played well enough in the first preseason game.

Jayson Stanley also earned a high grade from Pro Football Focus for his performance, for what it’s worth.

Expect the Falcons to fill Causey’s roster spot soon.

One name to watch for is former 49ers linebacker/safety Dexter McCoil. Aaron Wilson at the Houston Chronicle reports that the team worked him out today.

Update:

So much for that idea. The Falcons have confirmed Causey’s release and signed former Jets safety Ronald Martin to take his spot.
