Report: Falcons finalizing 3-year extension with superstar WR Julio Jones

According to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, the Falcons are finalizing a three-year, $66 million extension with Julio Jones.

While former MVP Matt Ryan is the engine that drives the Falcons offense, Jones is the nitrous oxide. Jones does more than just dominate as a receiver, though. His ability to draw double teams and force seven-man boxes opens up the rest of the field for other players to also make an impact. The team also values his mentorship of younger receivers like Calvin Ridley, Russell Gage and Justin Hardy to help improve their play, as well.

Bottom line, Jones deserves this deal and every dollar attached. Rewarding him for his services also helps the Falcons get other business done.

Extending Jones should also free up enough cap room over the next couple seasons so Atlanta can re-sign key members of the 2016 draft class. With long-term deals in place for Grady Jarrett and Deion Jones, the next players likely to be extended are Austin Hooper and De’Vondre Campbell.
