Report: Falcons expected to sign free agent safety Afolabi Laguda

The Falcons went into the 2018 season believing themselves to be pretty deep at the safety position. A pair of early season-ending injuries quickly disabused them of that notion. The absence of Ricardo Allen and Keanu Neal proved disastrous for Atlanta’s defense, even with the emergence of Damontae Kazee, who tied for the league lead with seven interceptions.

Adding more depth at the position has to be a priority for the Falcons this offseason, and they’re working on it. According to a report by Vaughn McClure at ESPN, the team is expected to sign former Rams safety and free agent Afolabi Laguda.

Like last year’s second-round pick Isaiah Oliver, Laguda played his college football at Colorado, where he posted two interceptions and seven pass breakups in 34 games.

After going undrafted last year, Laguda eventually signed with the Rams. He has not played in a live NFL game as of yet, though.

Expect Laguda to compete with Sharrod Neasman, Ryan Neal and some rookies for a backup safety spot.
