Report: Falcons begin extension talks with linebacker Deion Jones

Unable to strike a long-term deal with Grady Jarrett, the Atlanta Falcons have franchise tagged him and are now looking for other ways to improve what is a complicated salary cap situation in 2019. One good option for the front office is to renegotiate and extend existing contracts. Wide receiver Julio Jones is expected to get a reworked deal this offseason. He’s not the only star player on the team that could get an updated contract, though.

According to a report by Vaughn McClure at ESPN, Atlanta has begun long-term contract extension talks with their best defender, middle linebacker Deion Jones.

Jones has only one year left on his rookie contract. He is scheduled to have a cap hit of just $1.44 million this year, making him a remarkable bargain.

Extending Jones and safety Keanu Neal should be major priorities for the team over the next year, so it’s good that they’re getting started early.
