Report: Ex-Saints special teams coordinator joining Michigan

Former New Orleans Saints special teams coordinator Bradford Banta has found a new gig, per Field Yates of ESPN. Banta has joined the Michigan Wolverines staff under Jim Harbaugh in an analyst role. The connective tissue there appears to be a relationship between Banta and Harbaugh dating back to 1994, when they became teammates on the Indianapolis Colts for three years.

The Saints terminated Banta’s contract following the 2018 season along with the rest of their special teams staff. Respected consultant Mike Westhoff angrily returned to retirement after Banta’s firing, and several assistants found jobs with other NFL teams. The move allowed the Saints to bring in longtime Miami Dolphins special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi, who began building his own staff by hiring ex-Penn State coach Phil Galiano.

New Orleans has a star-studded special teams group including punter Thomas Morstead, kicker Wil Lutz, and coverage aces Taysom Hill and Justin Hardee. All they really need is stronger returners on punts and kickoffs.
