Report: Eric Gordon played with Rockets’ starters late in training camp

When the 2021-22 preseason begins for the Houston Rockets at home on Tuesday night, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see veteran guard Eric Gordon as part of a three-guard starting lineup.

Per Kelly Iko of The Athletic, that’s how the Rockets finished last week’s training camp in Galveston — with Gordon playing alongside Kevin Porter Jr., Jalen Green, Christian Wood, and Daniel Theis. Other considerations for that fifth spot could be Danuel House Jr. and Jae’Sean Tate.

“Houston had its ‘core four,’ if you will, for the duration of its Galveston stay: Porter, Green, Theis, and Wood,” Iko writes. “Gordon, House and Tate toggled in and out of the starting lineup to give the coaching staff different looks. But in the final days of camp, Gordon played with the starters, with House and Tate playing on the second team.”

There’s plenty of time for the pendulum to again swing, since Houston’s 2021-22 regular season doesn’t begin until Wednesday, Oct. 20. But for now, it seems that Gordon’s superior experience and floor-spacing benefits are the preference by head coach Stephen Silas for his starters.
