Report: Eagles would not violate CBA by placing Franchise tag on Nick Foles to facilitate trade

Much has been made about the scenario that will likely have the Philadelphia Eagles place the franchise tag on Nick Foles, at a price of $25 million, to ensure that they can control where he plays next. Questions have been raised in regards to whether the Eagles would violate CBA rules by purposely placing the tag on Foles, all while knowing that he’s not in the organizations long term outlook.

While a guest on 97.5 The Fanatic on Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter stated that he believes the Eagles can tag Nick Foles and then trade him without any violation of the rules.

“I can tell you this, I can’t speak at length but I was told flat out that’s false, false,” Schefter said on violating the CBA. “If they want to use the tag with the sole intention of trading him (Foles), they can. That won’t prohibit that move.”

Schefter was essentially refuting a report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, that questioned whether the Eagles would face a penalty for violating the CBA.

By placing the tag on Foles, the Eagles would go from $1.9 million under the cap to $23 million over the cap. It’s to be assumed that the Eagles will only tag Foles if they have a deal in place to send him to another team that would absorb the $25 million price tag. With such a scenario, Jacksonville or Miami seems to be the most likely destinations.

The Eagles have until 4:00 PM ET on March 5 to use the tag on Foles.
