Report: Eagles request interview with Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator has now received interview requests from every NFL team with a head-coaching vacancy this cycle.

According to a new report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Philidelphia Eagles have officially asked for permission to interview Eric Bieniemy for their head-coaching vacancy. They don’t have a specific interview-date scheduled due to the NFL’s anti-tampering policy and the Chiefs still being in contention in the playoffs.

The Eagles were the last team to fire their head coach, parting ways with former Chiefs OC Doug Pederson after five seasons. He led Philly to its first Super Bowl win back in 2017 in Super Bowl LII.

Bieniemy has already interviewed with five teams, three of which have officially hired new head coaches. He still needs to interview with the Houston Texans, who also submit a late interview request.

The Eagles might be Bieniemy’s best remaining shot to land a head-coaching job during this cycle. He has ties there as a player, playing with the Eagles for a season under Andy Reid back in 1999. Reid also remains well-connected in Philadelphia and has been one of the strongest proponents for Bieniemy getting an opportunity to run his own team. He’s given very public recommendations in each of the past three coaching cycles. If Jeffrey Lurie or Howie Roseman gave Reid a call, there’s no doubt that he’d give a glowing review of Bieniemy in private too.

In addition to Bieniemy, there’s been some reported interest from Philly in Chiefs QB coach Mike Kafka, who also has some history with the Eagles as a former player. The interest in the Reid coaching tree remains high, despite the recent split with Pederson.
