Report: Eagles notify Nick Foles that they’ll pick up his $20M contract option

The Philadelphia Eagles and Nick Foles are expected to part ways this offseason, and the first shoe in the dynamic just dropped, as Tim McManus of ESPN.com is reporting that the team has informed the Super Bowl MVP that they’ll pick his $20 million mutual option.

It was reported a few days ago, that the Eagles were expected to pick up Foles’ $20 million for the 2019 NFL season, thus leaving all the leverage in his hands.

The $20 million option would be fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the new league year. Foles also has the option to buy out the contract for $2 million and become a free agent, his likely play. If the Birds choose to franchise Foles, it’ll be at the cost of around $25 million, and the team will still have to find a willing trade partner for Foles or be forced to carry the most expensive backup in NFL history.

Foles now has five days to let the Eagles know if he’ll buy his free agency, or let this play out and opt-in as well, setting up the opportunity for the quarterback and the Eagles to work towards a suitable trade partner.
