Report: Eagles meet with San Diego State OT Ryan Pope at NFL Combine

On Monday we wrote about the Philadelphia Eagles need to start preparing for the day Jason Peters can no longer be the teams left tackle. The future Hall of Famer is playing on a year to year basis, but the Eagles need to eventually find a successor at left tackle that can keep Carson Wentz upright.

According to Mike Kaye of NJ Advance Media, the Birds had a formal meeting with San Diego State’s mammoth tackle, Ryan Pope. Pope is seen as a mauler who plays with a bit of a mean streak in the run game but can struggle at times in pass protection. His size is something a lot of teams will covet, and it was legit.

Per Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, Pope measured in at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds at the combine on Wednesday morning.

Pope spent the first three seasons of his career at right tackle before switching to the left side during his final three games of his Senior season. Pope could be viewed as a versatile tackle who could back up both sides of the line before moving him into Peters spot.

The Eagles currently have Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Matt Pryor and the much-hyped Jordan Mailata waiting in the wings. Lane Johnson could also eventually be switched to Wentz blind side as well.

Vaitai was the Eagles’ starting left tackle during the team’s Super Bowl LII win over New England and has performed well when inserted in the lineup for Peters.

Pope is projected by several outlets to be a mid-round pick in April’s NFL Draft.
