Report: Eagles expected to pick up Nick Foles $20M contract option

The Philadelphia Eagles and Nick Foles are expected to part ways this offseason, but just how and when, is a question that’ll be discussed over the next few months. The first shoe in the dynamic just dropped, as Ian Rapoport is reporting that the team will pick up his $20 million mutual option.

The $20 million option would be fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the new league year. Foles also has the option to buy out the contract for $2 million and become a free agent, his likely play. Or he could choose to play it out, with the Eagles either trading him or having the league’s most expensive backup quarterback. If Foles chooses the buyout route and free agency, the Eagles could still place the franchise tag on Foles, thus owing him $25 million next season if he signs it.

With the Eagles working diligently to free up salary cap space, placing the franchise tag on Foles is highly unlikely. Either way, Foles is set to get paid, and the Eagles will need to determine how they’ll proceed with or without Foles over the coming month.
