Report: Eagles, Chris Long agree to push back $1M roster bonus until start of training camp

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long is enjoying his offseason and while he recaps Game of Thrones episodes for Sports Illustrated, he’s also pondering his future as a professional athlete. Long remains “pretty undecided” about playing football in 2019 and as a show of respect from both sides, Fields Yates is reporting that the Eagles and Long have agreed to push back a $1 million roster bonus while he decides.

Long’s contract called for him to receive a $1 million roster bonus on May 1, but the date has been moved back again, and will now be due on the day that veterans report for training camp.

Long has to be commended for putting his health and happiness over the guarantee of his 2019 salary. Long wants to play for a purpose and not a contract, so if his role isn’t defined or unsuitable for him, the charismatic defensive end could choose to walk away and dive into his philanthropic endeavors.
