Report: Drew Brees suffered collapsed lung, multiple rib fractures

The New Orleans Saints completed an MRI exam of injured quarterback Drew Brees, and ESPN’s Ed Werder reported the details: a collapsed right lung and multiple rib fractures on each side of his chest. It’s too soon to say how long he could be out of action, but the Saints have been preparing for backup Jameis Winston to see an extended start in his place.

Brees suffered the injury when San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Kenatavius Street sacked him, though the play was nullified by a roughing the passer penalty (it didn’t appear to be an illegal hit, but that’s the way of the NFL these days). Brees was able to gut it out and finish the drive to send his team into halftime with a lead, but he pulled himself from the game after testing his injuries.

This isn’t the only issue ailing him; Brees has been limited in the last few weeks of practice with an injured throwing shoulder, compounding his situation. With a series of winnable games ahead, the Saints could ride with Winston while the 41-year old passer heals up for a postseason push. Stay tuned up for updates.
