WASHINGTON _ A draft of the Republican Party platform would drop the long-held definition of marriage and put America first on trade, according to a copy obtained by CNN.
The draft does not call for a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage, as in previous Republican platforms.
However, the document says it rejects the U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage and wants a reversal through either "a judicial reconsideration or a constitutional amendment returning control over marriage to the states."
The document also supports so-called "religious freedom" laws like the First Amendment Defense Act, which would give legal protection to businesses that deny services based on objections to same-sex marriage.
The draft also revises language on trade, saying "we need better negotiated trade agreements that put America first." The sentence reflects the language of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has clashed with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over trade agreements.
