Report: Donald Penn contract details emerge

The Washington Redskins didn’t hold back when it came to paying Donald Penn.

It turns out Penn gets a good chunk of cash up front but will get even more in incentives if he can end up playing as a starter.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared the details: “If Donald Penn is the starting left tackle for the #Redskins, he can make $5.03M in 2019, source said. He gets a signing bonus of $250K, the only guarantee. He’s also got a base salary of $1.03M, 46-man active roster bonuses worth $750K and incentives up to $3M more.”

In other words, if Trent Williams doesn’t show up and Penn is the left tackle, he’s going to be rewarded handsomely for the effort.

And Penn has made it clear in the past he wants to play and win, which at least partially explains his long stay on the open market.

From the Redskins’ perspective, the fact they tied so much up in incentives is smart business. Considering Penn talked to Williams before signing, they might end up paying up on all of it.
